Danger: Use different pellets!!!
**If there is *any* chance of your cat or dog swallowing any of the pellets, DO NOT use the pellets this system comes with. See the reviews of pet owners with cats getting life threatening bowl obstructions requiring surgery to remove these pellets!** My cats sometimes play with litter as toys...& sometimes they chew on or eat their toys...a dangerous combo with this litter! (Even though I love this system using different pellets, I am giving low stars because I think it is irresponsible for the company to put out a product so dangerous to pets.) Not to worry if you are reading this...I like this system even better with different, much less expensive pellets! When I first got it, I used those rounded glass craft pebbles that they use in vases & things. Too big for my cats to swallow. Washed them in the bath tub when needed. (I read another review using the soft foam balls designed for air pellet guns, or some such thing...might be even better if you are going the washable pellet route.) When I got a second cat, who didn't like the glass and was having some diahrea, I tried pine pellets (similar to Feline Pine, but you can get them from your farm store (look up Country store, or feed store, or farm co-op) as pine "animal bedding" pellets in a 40 lb. bag for $6). I loved them so much, I've never gone back. I don't even need or use the pads anymore. Saves me so much money & it is the best litter system! The pine pellets dissolve to saw dust when pee hits it, which falls through the grate to the tray bellow, which can be emptied into the trash. (Some people flush, and say they have no problem with clogs, but I would not recommend.) The sawdust naturally neutralizes any pee smells. It is cheap enough to make a thick enough layer that your cats can really cover any poop, also cutting smells. The only thing is, I would recommend this on tile or wood floor, not on carpet. When you empty the tray, there will likely be some stray saw dust...which sweeps up easily. (Just clean it often enough that the saw dust stays fairly dry & doesn't pile up too high.) I keep a little hand broom near by, on top of the lidded plastic container that the kitty poop trash bag lives in. I actually have a 2nd & a third plain litter pan, filled with the pine pellets, and use the Breeze litter box to empty them into & rake all the sawdust out when I clean them. This works for me, because I don't keep much litter in the Breeze box, since one of my cats prefers to not touch litter much and dig a whole to the bottom of the box, completely free of litter, before going. We just keep a little litter around the sides at the back, for this strange cat. So, the Breeze system works great as a sifter for our other boxes. It is quick and easy to clean, with the trash & hand broom all right there next to the Breeze box. The pine pellets are NOT dusty, and don't bother our allergies! No dust floating in the air, getting into your kitty's lungs & your own. I was worried that they would be a problem for allergies, but the "sawdust" is not fine, and the smell hasn't caused any problems...unlike every other cat littler! The pellets that the system comes with *did* bother my lungs, with a dust almost like a cement-dust (besides reportedly causing deadly obstructions to some cats when swallowed.) Summary: get this, but use different pellets!
