Seriously, guys, there's no way they intended for you to use these with the hollow part empty... for the reasons that you've discussed at length above. The proper way to use these is to keep the smaller blades inside the hollow part. Then you can guide the blade like you're used to, and everything will function perfectly as the designer intended.
