BEWARE of "AMPUTATION" DANGERS - KITTY PAWS!
Do NOT leave your pet unattended for any length of time, as little paws can get trapped, requiring AMPUTATION!!
First let me say that I did as much research as possible to find the best 'cage' for keeping my cat safe when I couldn't be 'watching' her. But this cage is far from perfect because there is not enough room between adjacent bars/connection panels in the cage where the panels are connected (clamped together). There is an extremely dangerous space which allows little paws to slip down, but not 'slip out' before the cat has struggled to get free, and lost mobility in the affected leg and paw! (It was a sweet, friendly, ,playful, tame cat which playfully reached through the bars, getting it's foot caught between the connecting cage panels.) Fortunately, after amputation, the cat has recovered and is able to walk now.
I thought the amputation was an isolated incident, but I had already had another cat's get a paw 'caught', and I quickly freed their paw, before I realized it was potentially a deadly cage. I assumed it was an isolated incident until it happened again! When this kitty needed amputation, I went back and re-read the reviews, finding out that another cat owner's kitten had also had to experience amputation!
Please, please do not use this cage as a permanent home for your pet, and NEVER USE IT if your pet will be unattended for more than a few MOMENTS!! It happened to me! Paying a vet for an amputation is expensive, but having a kitty with a 'dangling leg' is just horrible! My good intentions turned into a nightmare when my cat lost it's toes! Now, I can't re-sell my cages because it would be endangering another pet! Yes, I bought TWO of them, because I didn't read enough of the reviews. Sadly my kitty became one of the 'statistics', along with another reviewer, and probably many others who didn't think to return to this site to write a review.
It happened sometime between 11:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m., when I found the cat dangling from a 'connection clamp', and hanging by it's toes, unable to free itself from the connecting panels which accidentally became a trap for it's toes, cutting off circulation, stretching tendons, separating tissues, and requiring amputation of part of the foot. It was over a month before the kitty was able to walk without pain! Please do not get this as a permanent home/cage and depend on it for safety! It's dangerous, but it's the best I could find at that time,..... not knowing what problems might exist. I now use a large molded dog kennel made for a shepard or retriever size dog, which has no danger spots for kitty paws!
If you must leave your pet unattended, please find a container or cage that is shaped more like a molded plastic crate, and not a wire cage connected by wires and metal clasps/clamps, especially for a pet that likes to climb, be playful, or make 'claw-sharpening' motions. I will likely re-purpose these cages and perhaps use them as a cage for an animal that never takes any of it's feet off of the ground floor, or use the panels for my climbing vines!!
One person can not easily construct this cage, and the wheels are hard to attach. The cage 'folds' up, and has to be unfolded, and the wire sides must be 'matched' together, then slightly bent, to cause them to catch and hook. The doors to the cages don't close easily, and once closed, you must use a unwieldy latch to secure it, causing me to purchase additional clamps.
It is not 'sturdy' and it 'loosens' each time it's moved.
The black wire catches dust, cat hair, and looks pretty nasty after a week or so, unless you continuously wash down all of the wires. Please purchase a 'white' wire if possible if you choose a wire cage!
I am disappointed that the company has not read these reviews, and made some 'safety' changes! If I had made it a priority to read all of the 1,2, & 3 star ''reviews'' before purchasing these cages, my kitty would have never had to undergo surgery and lose it's toes!! It is truly a guilt trip that I didn't realize the dangers of a wire cage hooked together with clamps.
The 'shelves' are not wide enough for a cat to relax without folding it's feet underneath it, and they gradually begin to 'swag' and 'dip' under the weight of your pet, making the shelf not useful for putting a water or food dish at a higher level. The narrow shelves cause things that fall off of them to fall into the litter box on the bottom level because there isn't enough space for a litter box to fit 'under' a shelf without things that fall off of the shelf, including your cat, to land in the litter box. The cushion included is narrow and ends up in the litter box when it falls off.
The doors on the bottom of the cage are not wide enough to hold a 'larger-than-medium' sized litter box without having to turn it at an angle, causing litter to fall out onto the floor.
The floor of the cage is covered with larger wire, and it is large enough holes for a petite cat or skinny cat to escape while you remove the plastic pan for cleaning. When you remove the plastic tray to clean or wash it, you have to remove the litter box, which is usually too big to remove. When you go back to replace the black tray, don't be surprised if your cat is missing, ..... because mine has 'escaped' through the bottom wire while I was gone to wash the bottom tray.
Use of this cage should be limited to emergencies to prevent a worse tragedy!
