Unnecessary & long inner monologues and anti-abortion
I actually have really liked this author in the past, but this book was NOT up to par compared to her last books. First off let me state that I realize everyone has their own “opinions” about abortions. But when an author goes out of their way to disrespect women’s bodily autonomy and calls women who’ve had abortions “monsters”, that’s straight up pissing me off. I’ve had friends who’ve had abortions for their own reasons and it was THEIR choice and it supported them and their choice. It may not be an easy choice but it is their BODIES and they are not MONSTERS. Seriously just thinking about an author in a fictional book making claims like that is making me go full on mama bear to protect my friends and all women who are mistreated unfairly because they have bodily autonomy. There was ZERO need to write about abortion in this book. They was ZERO reasons for the author to talk about it as they did unless they were trying to use a book to preach at people like this is some Sunday pulpit. Not gonna lie, this has made me definitely not want to read any more of this author’s books.
The hating on woman’s rights was the tip of the iceberg though. This book had pages upon pages of useless inner monologues where they repeated the same stuff over and over. There was no development between the characters that made those monologues make sense. It’s a great storyline and the world building could have been awesome. Instead the world building was pretty sub-par and the relationship went from animosity and skittish behaviors to suddenly them making out as soon as she “spoke his language”. The flow wasn’t there and the romance wasn’t there. I was not invested in either character and they didn’t have any chemistry. When they first kissed I was like “huh? Why? That makes no sense.”
The author pushing her religious views on the readers is one thing ( and a bad thing) but having the book be really bad on top of it? Yikes.
