Do not use this if you work on ESD Sensitive electronics
Absolutely does not work. Ran voltage generation tests at 71.1 F and 48.5% rH using a ProStat PGA-710B Autoanalysis System, PFM-711A E-Field meter, and handheld electrode. Performed standard ANSI ESD S20.20 walking test and generated voltage peaks between 1,080 and 1,450 Volts using the KingWin. Baseline test with no ESD protection yielded voltage peaks from 1,050 to 1,275 Volts. The same test wearing a 3M Model 2026 metal band wrist strap connected to common point ground (electrical equipment ground here) yielded peaks of <10 V. The Kingwin contains a 1.0 MΩ resistor (measured at 0.9915 MΩ) connected with a screw to the back of the body and terminated by contact with what looks like T2 ESD mat material, to the screw at the top of the straps body. Surface resistivity of the material is 2.7 kΩ on one side and 53 MΩ on the other using a ProStat 801 and two-point probe. This indicates a dissipative material that does nothing but allow you to ground yourself by contacting a ground (which you would do with a real ESD wrist strap anyway) So, unless you want to hold the top screw to ground as you work this strap is useless for ESD sensitive electronics work.
Those of you who think it works because you haven't blown anything up yet need to gain an understanding of ESD and you yourself. The average person will not feel an electrostatic discharge unless it is more than 2,000 volts. You do not see the spark unless it is above 3,500 volts. Just because you don't see it or feel it does not mean you haven't created an ESD event. Even if your equipment continues to run now doesn't mean you haven't induced a latent damage that will cause premature or intermittent failures. I teach this stuff at NASA. Ground yourselves with a proper wrist strap for Pete's sake.
