These mats do exactly the same thing a tile floor does... they convey the ambient air temperature (IF not in sunlight) to the dog and are a LOT softer than the tile floor in the bathroom. There's no magic here... they don't create coolness (the word "recharges" doesn't honestly convey what they do)... the air temperature does that, just as it would with that tile floor. If sunlight hits them, they heat-up HOT like a car (or a tile floor). If the air is 70-degrees, the mat is likely to be about 70-degrees (like the tile floor). Likewise, if the air is 100-degrees, that's what the mat will be, so don't fall for the notion that they actually "cool" in hot weather... that's not what they do (nor does a tile floor). If it covers the floor of a crate in very hot conditions, or sunlight hits it, you could overheat your dog. Make sure your dog has options and that using this is always a CHOICE for your dog. The dog knows what's best, or not. The spot where the dog lays will tend to heat up (dog body heat is about 103-degrees) and the advantage of this is it's very large, so it always has cooler spots when it starts to heat-up to the dog's body temp. I actually used this on my own bed for a couple weeks to understand what it does and what to expect for my dogs. I had to put a sheet on it because it was TOO cool to start with (like laying on a cold tile floor), but within a few hours it heated-up from body heat and lack of air circulation... mine was large enough to move to the other cooler side. Do that for your dog so you understand the limitations of these things. UPDATE: Downgraded to 2-stars after two years and one replacement purchase when the 1st went flat on me, the 2nd one has gone flat as well. No evidence of leaking... I suspect the contents evaporate through the plastic cover. I'm going to buy a different brand for my 3rd one.
