The Great Paprika Sham
Szeged Hungarian Hot Paprika (distributed by Spiceco) used to be the best paprika readily available in the US. This stuff WAS amazing and I went through a lot of it. Now Spiceco has changed the labeling slightly to market this as "Hungarian Style" and it is no longer imported from Hungary. When the change first happened, I didn't notice the changes to the can. But as soon as I poured it out, it was obvious. Rather than a deep, dark red color, the new version is pale orange. The flavor is harsh and unappealing. In a word, it's TERRIBLE. The can went straight into the trash. I can't imagine why the company decided to make this change. I doubt they'll be selling as much as they had once their faithful fans discover the change. So now I search for a replacement. Bende makes a very good imported Paprika, but it's hard to find online for a fair price or affordable shipping. If you live in Southern California, you are lucky enough to have access to Otto's in Burbank, who is the king of Paprika here in the US. They have an amazing selection to choose from. They do ship, but it's expensive and orders must be placed via email or over the phone. For now, I'll pay for the overpriced imported paprika, but I've made it my mission to find a true replacement for Szeged that is affordable, easy to buy, and outstanding in flavor.
