Just gave up
I have a new TP router and even with the ability to use the WPA button push between the two, it didn't connect. The ethernet method was quick though and frankly, I preferred to do it that way anyway. I was only giving the push button a shot to see if it worked. I put the extender in my den where signal to devices was very low most of the time and right off the bat, signal was now excellent there and everywhere in the house in fact. The problem though is the signal on it was only two bars which is not recommended, and a speed test showed that to be true- horrible at DL 3.09 and UL at 4.44. So I moved it to my laundry room, where the signal remains high showing full bars. Even though the extender is in that closed room and not out in the open in the den, the signal on all devices is very good to excellent and speed tests now show DL at 17.41 and UL at 5.29. This for me is respectable. So be advised, the extender will show excellent signal to devices even if the extender itself is showing only 2 bar signal, which is sub par. Do not call it a day with that. Move the extender around until it shows good signal itself. THEN you're really getting the benefit. And don't let a wall stop you from choosing a location for it. If the signal is strong to the extender, it'll still be optimal in other rooms as well. In my den now where signal was very low, it's now excellent and web pages and videos, hbogo, netflicks, chromecast, etc is WAY better. Excellent! UPDATE- It crashed my network once, so the next thing I did was to update the firmware right away. All has been solid now. It was one firmware rev behind, out of the box. Updating it was very easy. So I think it's a good idea to update the firmware if you have any issues. Wireless is blazing now at 20/5.53 speed tests. Love it so far! Will update my review if I need to. UPDATE 2- Network crashed again today and my netbook drops connection and recovers quickly, but still drops out frequently enough to be a bother. I've since moved the extender to a spot where it's at full strength and it provides great signal to the areas that need it. Speed tests are great too. But I'm afraid the inconsistency of my wireless network because of this extender will ultimately make me pull this out of line entirely. I enjoyed a solid wireless network with a new router in line recently, albeit with some parts of the house with low signal. I'd rather have that than suffer through frequent wireless interruptions. I'll update again with my final findings, but the next one will be to drop my rating to one star and tell you to avoid this product. I'm leaving my initial review really liking this thing as a lesson- what happens in the first 12 hours using a product means virtually nothing. It's all about longevity. I'm using this product exactly as I should, even coupling it with a brand new TPlink router and it's been problematic. If two TPlink products can't work well with each other, than I don't know what to say. Will update again shortly either way. FINAL UPDATE- Not one minute after writing the second update, another wireless disconnect. So that's it- done. I wanted this to work in the worst way but it doesn't. I can only advise that in my experience, just plain avoid it- very sorry to say. Those who gamble like I did, good luck to you. August 2014 update. I kept this little guy around in case it got a firmware update. I checked back in and sure enough it did. Why not give it a shot. At this point I've moved my router for quite some time now, but in doing so of course some spots got better and some spots got worse. But a nice thing now is that I can put the extender in an opposite bedroom and increase signal stronger to weak spots more generally now, creating a pretty nice central signal everywhere. It has been working well throughout the night, lol. Not saying much and I'm not expecting much. I'm just seeing if the firmware update at least made it stable for me now. Time will tell. You can be sure I'll post an update either way. This is the last shot though. A wired access point will be next, undoubtedly a better solution regardless. But at the moment I'm getting super good speed tests and decent signal. We shall see how it goes for the little extender that couldn't, or could now? Stay tuned! Didn't have to wait long. Internet crashed by morning. Oh well, the product doesn't work for me. Next step with it, the trash.
