Don't Let the Bed Bugs Bite
I was on a research frenzy to get a great mattress for my toddler who is transitioning from a toddler bed to a twin size bed. I searched high and low; ultimately decided to go for value because we know we will eventually switch our daughter to an all foam mattress when she gets older. That led us to Linenspa as recommended by many online mommy forums and reviews. As I dive into the Amazon reviews, I was worried. There were many reviews on possible bed bugs. I read the Q&A section and an associate from Linenspa addressed the problem stating it's often mistaken debris from the graphic material as bed bugs because of it's dark speck nature. It's simply just tiny reminisce of the metal, easily brush off. My husband and I went back and forth, there are also many good reviews so we took a chance crossing our fingers.
Mind you, once we promptly received the mattress, we inspected it like crazy. We never dealt with bed bugs before, not quite sure what and how to inspect the mattress, but we took every precaution we can think of. When the item was taken out of the box, it's wrapped in 2 layers of plastic. We made sure to open the box on tiled floor, so there's no carpet for any possible bugs to cling onto. We cut open the first layer of plastic which kept the mattress rolled up. While it was still flat and deflated, we immediately checked every inch of the surface. There were in fact a few suspicious black specks under the second plastic but it doesn't quite look like a bug. We cut open the second layer and the mattress immediately inflated. We quickly went back to the few specks we saw earlier, poked at it, picked it up, feel it and it does feel somewhat metal like. It doesn't move so it didn't quite scream bed bugs to us. We checked up and down, left and right of the mattress again and didn't see anything so up the room it goes. Once we plopped it down on the newly built bed frame, my husband lied on the mattress (without sheets) to test it out. After what felt like 2 minutes, he immediately got a bite. He automatically convinced he got bit by a bed bug. The mattress itself is white so if there were any, we could have seen it right away right? So I dismissed him, told him maybe it was just a dust reaction. We continued to put on the washed sheets and set everything up. We took turns playing with our daughter on the bed, trying to get her comfortable in her new bed. She seemed to have enjoyed it, slept through the night with no problem (she's mostly a good sleeper to start with).
The next morning, my husband showed me he got a few bites across his torso. Our daughter and myself were in the bed also and we didn't get a single bite so I wasn't convinced there are bed bugs; but merely just my husband finding a connection that isn't there. When night time comes around, I asked my daughter to join me in her bed for a bedtime story. When I settled into her bed, I immediately took notice to the tickle on my foot and notice a small little dark spot. I picked it up with a piece of tissue and IT MOVED!!! IT HAS LEGS AND MOVED!!!!! I snapped that tissue shut and almost sure no insect can survive the deadly grip, but it was still alive!!!! THE FLATNESS NATURE OF THIS BUG IS IMMUNE TO BEING SQUISHED!!!!!
After a hectic battle with the bug, I contacted Amazon and they are picking up the mattress for a refund in a week. I purposely took a photo of the bug to show its legs so there's no denying that it's a metal scrap. Well, metal can't jump and move so yeah.....
