Ever wonder what regret looks like? IT'S THIS.
Pros: Weight of the product keeps my garbage can from blowing over during strong winds.
Cons: Literally everything else.
If you're reading these reviews, chances are you're trying to decide if you should make the switch to Zeosand or not. And if you've done your research, you've probably noticed that people either had a great experience with it, or a catastrophic one. According to Zeosand, they've had a few "bad batches" in the past, and apparently it's still an ongoing issue. If you're still on the fence about whether or not to switch, let this be the review that helps you make a decision.
DO NOT USE ZEOSAND. I REPEAT - DO. NOT. DO. IT. Abort mission. Do not pass go. Do not collect $200 - it won't be enough to cover the cost of having to replace the filter media back with regular sand and/or drain and refill your pool that has become a swamp-esque disaster. Whatever this product claims it can do better than sand, it does not outweigh the risk of a bad experience with it. TRUST ME.
I installed the product per the manufacturer instructions, and even backwashed it significantly longer than directed, due to some independent reviews that mentioned it took some pretty excessive backwashing to get it clear. Once it was running clear through the backwash, I rinsed it, let it settle, repeated, then put it on filter. It was a little cloudy coming out of the inlet, but not terrible. I went about my business and when I checked on it a bit later, I noticed the water was significantly more cloudy - like 'I couldn't see the bottom of the pool' cloudy. At that point it was getting dark, so I turned the pump off, thinking maybe a lateral was broken or something, and it would have to wait until the next day to troubleshoot. 12 hours later, and the pool was still very muddy/cloudy looking. It looked like a murky swamp - a far cry from the crystal clear blue waters filling the pool 24 hours earlier.
So at this point I break out my Aquabot robotic vacuum that filters down to 2 microns via filter bags, and I put it in the pool to see what it pulls out of the water while I start disassembling the filter to check for broken parts. 15 minutes later I pulled the vacuum out and found that the filter bag was completely coated in a greenish-brown MUD. I rinsed the bag, put the vacuum back in the pool, and went back to working on the filter. I took everything apart and inspected it for leaks/damage. NOTHING. Multiport valve is good. Gaskets are good. Standpipe is good. Laterals are good. PRODUCT IS BAD. It was literally disintegrating in my filter and blowing back into the pool as microscopic bits.
Zeo sand is now in the trash and I'm putting regular filter sand back in the filter this evening. From what I have been able to find, the regular filter sand should be able to clean up the mess, but if not, I will have to drain, scrub, and refill the pool.
Tldr; ZeoSand? More like ZeoMUD. AVOID IT AT ALL COSTS. My pool went from crystal clear to #SwampGoals in a matter of hours.
