Actual torque value is much higher than indicated
I currently own three bikes, but I've been riding for 25 years, and have owned a great many bicycles. I've always done my own maintenance.
Like anyone that's wrenched on a lot of stuff, I'm able to tighten things by hand fairly accurately. But as my bikes have become more and more expensive, and increasingly made of Carbon Fiber, some years ago I decided that using a torque wrench was a smart play! And for the great majority of work I do, I use one. Prior to placing the order for these new Pro Bike Tool adjustable torque wrench, I had three torque wrenches that I used for small jobs like bike maintenance...a Park TW 5.2, a Quinn electronic torque wrench, and a Proto 1/4" drive torque wrench. All three of those were checked using an electronic calibration tool for torque wrenches, and they are all remarkably consistent compared one to the other! But like I said...I wanted a set-and-forget solution for the most common jobs. My intention was to dedicate each tool to one of the three settings (4, 5, and 6NM), and put a label on each identifying which it was.
Well, today, I received three of the Pro Bike Tools Adjustable Torque Wrench, and I'm super disappointed at what I found. Because I'm pretty fussy about stuff like this, I wanted to verify that the new tools delivered the right torque. So the first thing I did was check them against my other torque wrenches. As it turned out, the first Pro Bike Tools torque wrench I tested, at an indicated 4NM, was actually applying about 5.1-5.3 NM of torque before it clicked. At an indicated torque of 6NM, it was applying 8.1-8.3NM of torque before clicking.
I ran the same test against all three of the Pro Bike Tools torque wrenches, and the results were the same in each case...all of them were way higher than the indicated value, and by nearly the identical amounts! At whatever indicated setting I chose on the adjustable wrench, the actual applied torque was roughly 30% higher than it was supposed to be.
That's just not acceptable! A torque wrench has only one job. And most torque wrenches have to do it over a much wider range than 4-6NM. So for these tools to consistently exceed the indicated torque value by over 30% is unacceptable. Certainly, one could go ahead and use them, knowing that 4NM (indicated) is actually 5.1NM, and that 6NM indicated is actually 8+NM. But what happens if you really need to go down to 4NM? What happens if you forget, and accidentally apply 8.2 NM of torque to a fastener that's only supposed to go to 6NM? I'm sending them back for a refund. I'll try the Park Tools model instead, and hope that for nearly twice the price, the Park model is at least delivering the correct torque!
