Avoid the Phantom 4 if you plan to shoot over water.
My 2-month old Phantom 4 randomly dropped into the Pacific during a critical company video shoot, and after only half a dozen flights.
As with every flight I went though an extensive pre-flight procedure including compass calibration, home setting, and prop inspection. Everything looked great.
After about 30 minutes of total flight time that day, and on the 3rd freshly-charged new battery the Phantom suddenly decided it was a submarine and plopped vertically into the Pacific from about 5 meters up.
When it fell the drone was following a sailboat, and was only about 100 meters from remote when the video suddenly cut out. The drone stopped and hovered for a brief second, then it dropped straight down into the ocean--almost like it was in a landing sequence.
Battery was at 77% and GPS had an excellent lock. The drone had been working flawlessly all day, both in the same spot, and at much further distances. Props didn't break either because it floated straight down--totally level.
No great explanation other than hardware failure.
Anyhow, to my dismay there was near-zero chance of recovery without proper scuba gear. The done dropped into ~20ft of choppy ocean with only 1-2ft of visibility
Out $1300 in just a few seconds. Collision avoidance and all the bells and whistles this thing supposedly had didn't do it any good. Plus in addition to the brand-new drone, I also lost half a days worth of critical production footage--worth significantly more than the drone itself because other costs involved.
Disappointed with DJI. I've read numerous posts in their forums (and elsewhere) of users claiming this model just loves dropping into water. I highly recommend avoiding it if you plan to shoot over any water ever. Don't even try it.
