What a convoluted mess
I had high hopes for this FirstReads choice. A detective from a major metro area getting a major dose of small town culture shock while trying to solve a murder sounded like just the sort of book that would keep me entertained. Unfortunately, it didn’t take this story very long to go off the rails. I’m not even sure what genre would best describe this book. It’s certainly not a police procedural nor is it much of a thriller. The plot, which is a word that I use loosely to describe this story, is convoluted and implausible. Perhaps the author was trying for literary fiction but it doesn’t fit that category either. I would describe it as a psychological story. This is a first person narration with a lot of introspection but it is tedious rather than suspenseful. There is some language that sensitive readers may find offensive. I am sorry that I wasted my time with this selection but I dislike writing a review unless I have finished the book. Hopefully, my sacrifice will keep someone else from making the same mistake.
