I had bought these to replace some eclipse blackout curtains that had the same problem. I don't know if they are not rated well for the sun to be hitting them but we live in a dessert where the sun is very strong and after about a month the curtains started emitting the same chemical smell as the eclipse brand did. It's this very strong,chemical, almost chlorine kind of smell. And now I can't return them. Whatever plastic they are putting on theses curtains, which both are made in China, is really bad. I bought some longer black blackout curtains, Amazon brand, for my other window which also replaced the chemical smell eclipse ones and I'm glad to say that those are not emitting any chemical smell as of yet. So it may just be the batch of these shorter, may blue curtains
