These dryer balls do not do what is claimed, and my kids got the data to prove it for their science project.
My wife and I homeschool our children, who have a science fair coming up for our homeschool co-op. As a scientist/engineer myself I thought it would be interesting for them to test the theory of whether dryer balls actually decrease drying time. We washed/spun a load of five large towels and tested drying time using four Whitmore Dryer Balls ("Blue Balls"), four wool dryer balls, four tennis balls, and using no dryer balls. In other words, we washed the same five towels and dried them four separate times. We weighed the towels at the beginning of the drying cycle and every 10 minutes throughout, and obviously as the towels dry they become lighter with less water in them. The results: There was no statistical or discernable difference between any of the groups (see attached picture). I would say the accuracy of the weighing process was +/- 0.1-0.2 lbs and so any small differences were within the error of the weighing. Also, we ran a separate experiment to measure the height of the five dry towels when folded in the same way, in order to test "fluffiness" with and without the dryer balls. The fluffiest towels were when NO dryer balls were used. We also did not notice any difference in static, qualitatively. The main limitation of our study is that we used five large towels, I suppose it's not impossible that loads of clothes with smaller items could have different results. But I highly doubt it, based on these results. These simply do not do what is claimed. Given that, I think it has to be a one-star review.
