Review of D-Fantix Model BT-168D Battery Tester
I seldom write a seriously negative review, but this product seems badly designed and of poor build quality. I found it difficult to use, and unlikely to last long in ordinary use. This is my experience: 1) As you can see from the picture in the listing, the battery is supposed to lie in a slot in the body of the tester, and the red plastic slide is pushed against the battery positive terminal to make contact and read the voltage. 2) The concept is fine, although the battery polarity is oddly reversed, but the slot into which the battery lies is so narrow that even a AA battery will not seat properly, and keeps falling out as I attempt to make a reading. 3) The problem is that the designers decided to use the same narrow slow slot to seat the battery, and also to provide the track along which the red plastic slide is to move. 4) So we have two problems: The slot is too narrow to properly seat the battery, and the red plastic slide is so poorly designed that it is loose and rattles around in the slot. 5) I became curious to see what awfulness was hidden inside the tester. It is held together with two small screws, so I removed them and lifted off the side cover. Hmmnn. THE ELECTRICAL CONNECTION BETWEEN THE RED PLASTIC SLIDE AND THE SMALL ELECTRONICS CHIP INSIDE THE UNIT WAS A VERY, VERY, VERY (ENOUGH "VERY?") THIN WIRE, ATTACHED TO THE SLIDE WITH A TINY SOLDER JOINT. No strain relief, no small clamp, no drop of epoxy or silicone rubber, nothing secured the wire to the slide. So one may be confident that that thin little unsecured wire eventually will break off and "Presto!" - - the battery tester is dead. 6) So we have the worst of both worlds - - a unit that is difficult to use, and that is so poorly designed and built that it is likely to fail in ordinary use. As Scrooge would say: "Bah! Humbug!" 7) BTW, there is a better tester, with an analog meter, available from Amazon. It is the Amprobe Model BAT-250 Battery Tester. Cost on Amazon at this writing is $11.96.
