I bought this mat last year and didn't think the smell was strong. I really loved it until recently I found out how harmful the material -PVC can be. I know it doesn't have lots of toxic chemicals but PVC itself is poison plastic. You can find some details at this website: [...] I remember clearly that when I purchased the product (from [...]), it read "made of PVC" in the description. However, now when I realized that PVC is harmful and tried to check some detailed information about the mat, I couldn't find anything about PVC in the online description. All they talked about was that it "made of only Eco-Friendly materials approved by CPSIA in USA and safe standards in Europe." It's now not available at Costco.com so I can't find the description any more. Of cause you will know when you get the instruction in the package but at that point you may not want to bother to return the whole thing. Makes me wonder the reason why they hide the material information. I have to say that there is no real safe playmat on the market, which is very sad, maybe this one is the safest, still it's made of PVC. I think we customers deserve to know what exactly was the material when the seller claims it's made of "only Eco-Friendly materials".
