Almost 5-star except for some shoddy quality control UPDATED DECEMBER 2020
I've become somewhat of a nectar feeder connoisseur, feeding Anna's year-round here in Western Washington state, and others during spring and summer months for many years now. I've come to know what they like (species specific to a small degree) and what they do not. The design of this feeder great overall.
- Five feeding ports
- A flat base allows you to set it down easily as well as attach a warmer
- A wide-mouth reservoir opening makes for both easy cleaning and filling, as well as making so that the winter nectar warmer can work more efficiently and effectively.
- And MOST important, a well placed, correctly sized and distanced perching ring. It allow the birds to perch anywhere around it and is the correct distance away so that they are able to drink from the feeding port *while* perched. Many feeders fail at this.
My only complaint was that there was a problem with the hanging ring not being tightened enough. Had I not noticed and filled and hung the feeder as it arrived, I've no doubt the first small gust of wind would have allow the glass reservoir to slip right out of the hanger and shatter at the ground. It was easy to fix with a pair of pliers (I just loosened, and slightly repositioned the final bend/twist in the wire hanger so that it was tigher along the glass lip of the bottle and all is well. But of course, many won't be so lucky if this is a common issue.
Overall I'd order another and it's my (and the birds from I've observed) second favorite feeder type around here now.
EDIT/UPDATE 9/1/2019: I'm going to order more of these. The base if hugely preferred by the Anna's Hummingbirds around here (Rufous as well) and it has become the favorite feeder of all in the yard. Far easier to clean and fill than bottle-type feeders since the opening is so large. It's been out 24/7 through winter, spring and summer with not a problem at all.
EDIT/UPDATE 12/21/2020: I have to remove an entire TWO stars from my rating and add a photo of the 2nd feeder that I purchased only on May 19th of this year (2020). It has not been dropped. It has not been in a dishwasher. It has not seen freezing temperatures (only very mild PNW weather) and yet as I was cleaning it two days and removed/unscrewed the feeder portion from the jar reservoir 3/4 of the threaded portion of the jar just sheared/shattered off in my hand. I am AMAZED that I didn't lacerated my palm somehow. This is testament to the fact that there is either an occasional quality-control problem, particularly in the glass tempering for these based on this experience and a fair number of other reviews. I still recommend this feeder overall for ease-of-use and because the birds prefer it..... BUT this is ridiculous. This one was barely more than 6 months old.
I WILL AWAIT THE MANUFACTURER TO REACH OUT TO ME TO ADDRESS THIS AND UPDATE THE REVIEW ACCORDINGLY.
