Oh, the horror! The humanity!
I had purchased this first volume of the St. Cyr chronicles based on the assumption that it was a historical mystery. I plunged into the opening pages with a pleasant tingle of impending discovery and perhaps, if lucky, the unearthing of an enjoyable new (to me) author. And yet, the prologue was swarming with imagery, similes, metaphors and foreshadowing - of what, one knew not - creating within a sense of unease, of undefined but all-too-near calamity. Then, the dread I had been desperately suppressing flamed ferociously into force as I read this sentence: “Rachel pushed the door open wider, one artfully curled lock of golden hair fluttering against her cheek in the sudden outward gush of air.” I knew instantly that I had been tricked, mercilessly played for a fool, and my heart shriveled and froze as the full terror enveloped me in its clammy grasp - “You numbskull, this is a ROMANCE NOVEL!” I quickly flung the offending tome across the room, curled into the fetal position, turned my electric blanket up to 9 and wept copious, bitter tears into my pillow.
