No, no, no, and *#%! no.
The idea is brilliant. I’m so glad it is helpful to many people. It was quickly a disaster for me.
Physically I am a great candidate for this product. I’m on the older side of their target market (48 years) but I was in excellent condition prior to my injury, climbing 6-10K’ per week on hikes. I’m 5’6” and 138#. The nature of my injury is such that I can put ~50% of my weight on my bad leg, so the relative discomfort of using crutches is far outstripped by the discomfort of using this product.
Primary failure for me was that I just did not feel stable and safe on this thing. It’s entirely possible that if I’d invested more time upfront I could have gotten used to it, but the immediate risk of falling was too great. I almost fell while trying it out, and if I hadn’t been next to a bar-height kitchen counter, I likely would have fallen. And not just fallen, but fallen *badly.* Because of the way my calf is secured, I cannot extend it as a counterbalance when starting to tip. It felt like losing my balance while being tied up. Super scary!!
Secondary failures below all flow from primary one; if I’d felt safe putting in more time to get used to it, these things might have resolved on their own.
- Low back immediately felt strained when I started walking around. (My low back is healthy but sensitive from a history of minor bike crashes.)
- Knee immediately felt strain when full weight was placed on it on the platform. This was not a case of the pad being too thin. Knee is just not happy having to bear my full weight.
- When placed at the right height according to fitting instructions, inner thigh constraint was extremely uncomfortable and dug into my hip/groin. When placed a little lower, stability was compromised.
- Because I felt so unstable on it, it wasn’t really hands-free. I needed to lean on the handle with 1 arm in order to feel even remotely stable while walking around.
I have no criticism about the quality of the product itself because I just don’t feel safe enough to spend the necessary time & energy I’d have to in order to become more familiar with it.
Hope this helps. Sorry iWalk. Thank you for trying.
