Obituary June 1, 2010 for Anita Blake
Anita Blake was an amazing detective and necromancer, she fought hard against the preternatural community, while still managing to maintain her grace and dignity (at least through the first 6-7 books). Everyone loved her spunk, her spirit, and the fact that she'd rather punch a guy in his nuts than find out what said nuts looked like. She wanted monogamy, maybe got a trio, but hey who doesn't want two guys all over you? She has fought against master vampires, old shifters, spirits, Fey and crazy chimera guys. She started her own pack/pride/whatever and raised it from the ground up. Today we learn she has truly died. This death was a long time coming, in fact many saw signs of her illness as far back as The Killing Dance, though for a while she made quite a recovery with Obsidian Butterfly. Alas, even with the illness in Remission it was only a matter of time before Dance Macabre arose and shook us all to our core... the very thing we feared had happened, no more remissions, no more hope. How long will she continue to hold on to her thread of life? It's anyone's guess now. Why the obituary then? Because Anita Blake is dead, truly dead, what masquerades now in her body is some kind of nymphomaniac who still holds some fondness for guns and sharp objects. But alas that is not our Anita, and many are now officially mourning her. I had hoped that things would get better after Skin Trade... but it seems with Flirt and now Bullet... that was never meant to be and was my own selfish wishful thinking. Now a brief synopsis of her final days: Jean Claude (remember the sexy frightening vampire turned pansy?) and Asher (scarred guy who was always a pansy) aren't sleeping with each other.... But they want to, Richard is finally ok with who he is (is he? Is he really? Next book he'll cry again) and joins all the sultry fun (oh my god I almost choked typing that). The Mother of All Darkness gets lonely and wants Anita's body so she can have her fun with all the boys. Anita is still homophobic (which is really weird considering all her kinks), and there are many nameless weres who serve as food... actually this could be how she got sick. I mean eating all those different types of guys all the time, anyone is bound to get stomach indigestion... in fact I bet that's how she got sick and why she's still sick.. you are what you eat. Well unfortunately the vampire council doesn't realize that the three happy people (JC, Richard and Anita) are too busy having fun and eating to care about their power gain, but they are becoming too powerful... which means people want them dead! I only have one question (besides when will Anita actually kick the bucket) how much longer? I just don't see where this story can go, how many more men are brought in? How many more people try to kill her but fail? The last few books I have sat and read in my bookstore (same with this one) and I just feel embarrassed with it sitting on my lap, as if everyone can see and are shaking their heads that I'm trying to give CPR to someone who is already in rigor...
