DIY Kombucha! You don't need to buy a SCOBY, especially not from this seller
Dealing with this seller was one of the more bizarre customer service scenarios I've experienced. I needed help with mold on my newly purchased scoby so I contacted the seller. The seller's response was not only immediately defensive, but blatantly combative. We went back and forth for some time, the absurdity slowly escalating, until I threw my hands up. The reaction of this seller leads me to believe that he/she is either hiding something or should not be in business. Or both. Also, this seller recently changed their name on Amazon. They were formerly bookluver888. Now they are poseymom. I find that suspicious.
In my efforts to find a solution, I discovered several blog posts on starting a scoby from store-bought kombucha. I picked up a bottle from the local health food spot and brewed up a batch of tea. Success! In one of our exchanges, I informed the seller that I was currently growing a scoby from store-bought kombucha and he/she refused to believe me, stating that it was impossible. As I write, I am happily sipping kombucha made from my own scoby. You can do it too!
I would only purchase a scoby from this seller as a last recourse. Try starting your own from a store-bought bottle. Or ask someone at your healthfood store for a reference. They will probably be much more pleasant and accomodating. If you want to try starting your own I suggest getting a brand that is local or smaller-production. I tried GTs first and it didn't start. For my second attempt, I used MTO and I saw signs of my newly forming scoby within hours.
