Why don't Chinese manufacturers (and their sellers) get it?
Bought this extractor and tried to make sense of the operating instructions with the product in front of me. You'd swear that whoever writes these instructions is looking at a very different product than the one they purport to be writing about. For example, there is no mentioning of the large nut screwed on top of the main unit much less what it's meant to do. You figure that it has to have to do with the main suction tube connection and common sense would be that the nut goes behind the attachment for the main tube, not in front of it (so it forces the main hose connection off the unit while under vacuum -- as I found out from the replies to customer's comments, but not from the manual). There is also no mentioning of the small vacuum plug (attached to the unit with a short chain) and what the purpose of it is? There are three more orifices near the vacuum plug with one plugged, the other two open, but no mentioning in the instructions what purpose these holes serve? There is no mentioning of what this product can not do -- such as -- as many customer questions implied, this product does not extract the used oil from the reservoir into another container(s) so you can take the used oil to the recycling center. You eventually figure it on your own that you have to pour the used oil in other containers (like the ones the new oil came with) or take the whole reservoir to the center for them to empty it for you. In short, the manual is terrible if you look for help in understanding the product and you end up frustrated so much that you just want to return the thing! They did 99 percent of the job but the last one percent (instructions) is as important as the 99 percent.
UPDATE: Once you figure it out, it works well. With the engine at normal operating temperature, it takes less than 5 minutes to get 8 quarts out. THAT IS, if the length from top of the dipstick tube on your car to the bottom of the oil pan is less than 24 inches. That's the length of tubing that it comes with. Today I tried to extract the oil from my SUV and the tubing was 18 inches too short! To replace with a 4-foot tubing, you have to pull the existing one out which is impossible without cutting the steel collar around the tubing mount to ease the 2-foot tubing out and replace with a 4-foot tube. Some manufacturers like to be penny wise and pound foolish. A longer tubing would have cost them another 50 cents to take this product from a pain in the rear (see also the lack of clear operating instructions above) to an easy to use and versatile tool.
