ELECTRICAL SHOCK
I DOUBLE-DOG DARE AMAZON TO PUBLISH THIS REVIEW. This toaster gave me an electrical shock on first use, about the same as from grabbing an electric fence wire. It hurt, and it was, ahem, shocking. I should not need to worry about faulty wiring in any appliance. After unpacking, I plugged it in and tested it with a bagel. The plunger lever is plastic, so non-conductive. As it was toasting, I touched the outside, metal (and therefore conductive) housing and was shocked. I happen to have stainless steel countertops. I shudder to think what might have happened to me or my grandchildren if the counters were electrified. Since the wiring was faulty, could the toaster have started a fire if I kept it? I contacted Amazon to tell them about the manufacturing defect. The Chat person claimed that an “internal team” would “investigate” the problem when I returned the toaster. He offered me $5 off on my next order as compensation. The Chat dude stated that no, Amazon would not share any documentation of its supposed investigation with me. So, for the wholesale cost of a $30 toaster plus five bucks, Amazon precludes legal action and gets to hide all the physical evidence of negligence and personal injury. What a deal. Except for a few Dualit toasters that are made in England, ALL other toasters sold on Amazon are made in China and are shoddy, no matter the price. From reading reviews, they break quickly, don’t work well, and as I found, can be dangerous. I know someone who has used the same American made toaster since the 1950’s. I should ask her to will it to me. Appliances of all kinds used to last for decades. Now, we routinely buy junk made overseas that quickly ends up in our landfills. Shame on Amazon. Why not contract with a US company to make a quality toaster that is worth paying for? UPDATE. The Amazon Chat dude forwarded my contact information to their insurance company, Sedgwick. I did not ask them to do this. They contacted me to ascertain what had occurred. Predictably, since there was no bodily injury, the insurance company withdrew the claim initiated by Amazon. They have merely covered their legal backsides. Perhaps this fake claim is what Amazon regards as their “investigation.” If so, I fear that this faulty toaster will be resold to another customer, either through Amazon or another discount site. More people could be hurt, perhaps seriously. Amazon the EvilCorp is still selling this toaster.
