Nothing more than a novelty- joke as a body mass indicator or measurer
I purchased this scale a few months ago in the hopes of helping me with overall health tracking my anatomy while doing exercise and nutrition. I can say that initially getting this scale I was happy in the fact that it did help in keeping track of weight and tracking progress. However, I have a scale that was made in the 1960's that serves the same purpose as this one. They both are accurate at the weight although that is nothing more advanced than other scales bases on the physics of gravity to the relation of ones size to that force of gravity. The mobile app is great and it is very easy to read. Enough of the positive. I was upset in the fact as the months were going by and physical changes were occurring but the readings were not much of a difference other then a considerable loss of weight- in 3 months I lost a total of 51 lbs, 12 inches from my abdomen and 9 inches from my waist. I decided to look into the accuracy of this scale. The readings are nothing more than an algorithm created in its software. The BMI is the computation of height and weight. You don't need this scale to tell you that. Just look on the internet for the chart. Won't cost a thing. All the other readings like body fat %, muscle mass %, lean body mass, body water %, visceral fat, basal metabolic rate, and body fat mass are not even close to any accurate measurement. These are all algorithms set in on the two factors of weight and BMI. How do I know? The first was when I was prepping for a procedure that required me to drink a copious amount of water in a 24 hour period. I weighed myself at the initial onset. With every single hour that went by and the measurement of amount of water that I took in was close to exact the amount of weight that the scale showed. Incredible that during each time my body fat percentage also was increasing. Within 6 hours, the scale had shown that I gained 6 pounds of weight and 4.6% more of body fat, but my body's water percentage never increased but actually decreased by a little over 1% with close to 7 pounds of water ingested. For a body to gain 1 pound of fat one would need to consume 3500 calories in access of normal resting metabolic rate. Now before the trolls hit me, water is heavy and a cup of water weighs 0.52 pound. It took some time but I have figured it out. I purchased a tape measure of body calipers to measure body fat %. Based on more accurate calculations (again you can find those calculators on the internet), my body fat % from the scale was in access of 16% higher than what actual measurements of 9 areas of my body parts. The scale had shown a body fat mass of 24.3% and the actual caliper calculations were 8.6 %. Bone mass and density need to be measure by more elaborate diagnostic tools to come to a reading not a little electric current through the thickness of the soles of the feet. Even the visceral fat has not changed on the scale. And that reading's error became apparent when I had an MRI of my abdomen and measurements performed showing the level of visceral fat was exceedingly lower. Shoot, you don't even need that expensive diagnostic machine to tell if visceral fat reduced. Just look at my earlier measurements and know that a person can't go from a 42 inch waist line to a 33 inch waist line and not know that one has not lost any visceral fat. As well as having great blood lab test with zero metabolic syndrome problems like diabetes. Why did I take the time to write a review? Because maybe someone else won't go through the anxiety and the disappointment within one self that has changed every aspect of their life and worked so very hard and looked to a product to at least have some type of accuracy in measurement for which they market this item. All the days of worry and prospects of giving up because the results were just not occuring. So, my assertion is to save your money. Visit your doctor annually, purchase a $6 tape measurer & body fat caliper, and a scale that does just body weight. All the other readings can be done at no cost on calculators on the internet. The most accurate measurements are done by more expensive diagnostic tools like a MRI or a DEXA scan. There is a reason companies misguide the consumer to buy their products--make money at any cost for the bottom dollar. Buyer beware. The responsibility is on you. Take care and good health.
