Simple Solution is attapulgite clay (Please read the Safety Data Sheet!)
With a multi-cat household, I'm always on the quest to find a better 'unscented' clumping cat litter. When Simple Solution introduced their 30-Day litter I had to investigate how this litter could absorb urine that did not need scooping. Here's what I found from the Material Safety Data Sheet.
The clay is known by many names but Simple Solution uses the name attapulgite clay. It's chemical name is Hydrated Aluminum Silicate. We know how dangerous silicates are especially to the moisture in a cats lungs. Pet parents are advised not to breath the dust as it can damage the mucous membranes and to wash your hands immediately if it comes into contact with your skin. If you inhale it seek fresh air. It's quite obvious this ingredient is questionable.
So how could this possibly be safe for our cats? They walk on it and then ingest it by licking it off of their paws. They are inhaling the silicate dust particles as their noses are inches from the litter. The silica slowly dries up their mucous membranes. The safety data suggests that over exposure may even cause cancer and organ failure. Save yourself the heartbreak and stick to a non-silica cat litter.
Simple Solution? Maybe. Sick cats and high Vet bills? Quite probable!
