If Stieg Larsson had written Salander this way, then none of us would even know about The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
If you read the first three books in the Millennium series then you’ll probably read this one regardless of good/bad reviews. But speaking as someone who read and enjoyed the first three books, this one is a major disappointment. It literally fails on so many levels. The idea that Blomkvist and Salander “join forces again in this adrenaline-charged, uniquely of-the-moment thriller” as posited by the book description is farcical at best and an outright misrepresentation of the storyline (a lie) at worst. It would require a spoiler—which I won’t give—to fully illustrate that statement, but don’t open this book expecting to see Blomkvist and Salander doing anything remotely “adrenaline-charged.” I’m sure David Lagercrantz is a good author, but Stieg Larsson filled the first three books with edgy, page-turning, shock-filled prose—plus he created a truly unique character with Salander. This book has none of that—not even a noteworthy Salander. In fact, you remember when Salander tattooed the lawyer in the original series? In this new book, there is a scene in which Lagercrantz has Salander confront a man who physically abused a boy. It was an obvious attempt to stay true to the Salander that Stieg Larsson created—but being honest, it was laughable. Really, it was that bad. If Stieg Larsson had written Salander this way, then none of us would even know about The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.
