I ordered this scoby from this company on the recommendation of a friend. I was excited to see that it was coming from the Rocky Mountains (since I live in Colorado) - and when it took forever after the shipped notice to arrive, I was unhappy to find out that it was shipped from the Rockies to their (I assume) distributor in New Jersey, and then back across the country to me. I did lots of reading about the process before ordering, took pictures along the way because I was concerned about some dark spots on the scoby when it arrived, and ended up with a batch that looked like kombucha mixed with milk (very cloudy) and mold growing on top of the scoby. I contacted the seller immediately, and then got involved in a long, ongoing conversation about how my concerns were invalid because what I saw were just trapped tea leaves and strands of new growth, how it's impossible to grow mold in an acidic environment, how the pictures I supplied showed that I had a cap on the jar during the process (I did not). When I took off the coffee filter and saw white and blue fuzzy mold growing on top of the scoby - an occurrence that googling told me means I should dump the kombucha and not consume it (not that it's impossible for it to happen), I knew something was wrong. It smelled like kombucha, it fizzed like kombucha, but the fuzzy mold wasn't a welcome finding. I concede that I may have filled the jar too full (I filled it to the base of the neck of the gallon jar - the company spokesperson with whom I spoke said it should have been at least an inch lower). But their constant response that it was impossible that it grew mold just got irritating and old. In response to my first email, they said that they wanted to help walk me through the problems so that I could brew a good batch. In the end, I think they just wanted to justify that there was no way that they had anything to do with what went wrong. So be it - I have no desire to order from them again.
