★☆☆☆☆
Slow, boring, ridiculous costumes, poorly written, and poorly directed
I'm truly angry at Amazon and whoever decided the Rings of Power should be done this way. I have absolutely NO problem with the story line being non-canonical -- I'm no Tolkien diehard -- I just want to see a good story, great sets, sweeping landscapes, and something that adds to the Middle Earth mystique beyond LOTR and the Hobbit movies. Well the (only) good thing about this show is that it DOES add more to Middle Earth than the movies, in the form of Numenor, more on characters like Isildur, and the youthful exploits of Elrond and Galadriel. But after the first couple of episodes, which captured my attention purely on hype and expectation, I started to get a sinking feeling that it was going all wrong. A few interesting things happened with Galadriel's quest and the appearance of The Stranger, but the slow pace of those first couple of episodes now seems positively brisk compared to the last few episodes. I now have 5 episodes under my belt and Amazon is not going to get any more out of me, I refuse to be taken for a fool. They clearly spent 100s of millions of dollars on sets and CGI, and they are trying to get their money's worth by dragging the story out into as many episodes (and seasons) as possible. But every episode now is a series of slow-motion shots with ridiculous operatic background music, characters speaking to each other in daytime-drama dialogue, and me laughing at the next stupid costume. Kate Hawley, if you are listening, you should be FIRED. Since there are so many other reviews that delve into the poor quality of the dialogue, story, and direction, I'll focus on the costume design and how it will just make you angry if you really look closely. First of all, not a SINGLE character can even walk around normally without having to hold up a piece of their costume for fear of tripping over their feet or having an accessory (weapon, tool, etc) bounce around. In the last episode poor Disa was just walking down 2 steps and to hold up her skirt or she would have tripped and fallen. Elrond has these stupid long flowing robes with a scabbard which is too lose and if you watch, you can see he can never release his hold or it would bounce around and hit him. And what's really funny is if a character ever has to RUN! Oh my god, keep an eye out. They hardly ever show anybody run because it's totally ridiculous. The poor actors are in serious danger of tripping over their robes and getting injured. Just go back and take a look at LOTR and the functional nature of the costumes. Look at Eowyn when she gets in a scuffle with Aragon and then in the finale. Her clothes are rustic, functional, and totally believable. Look at Tauriel when she's in battle, no stupid flowing robes that get in the way. Then there is poor Bronwyn and her sleeveless, backless, shoulder-less costume, which of course has long flowing skirt below. In a scene where all other characters are wearing multiple layers of warm-looking coats (indicating colder conditions), there she is in all her sleeveless glory. Secondly, Galadriel just mysteriously seems to change her outfit EVERY scene. She's a damn prisoner on Numenor yet she is given the finest blue silk robes (which impede her movement), then ANOTHER set of fine blue silk robes, then finally a set of armor appears out of nowhere (the one that is always shown on the main amazon page for TROP). I guarantee Peter Jackson would never have allowed such discontinuity on his set.
