★☆☆☆☆
I was horrified
This book went into the trash. I couldn't make myself put it in the Goodwill box bc I did not want to promote this ugly, ugly message of greed with no end, this nasty kid who grows up into a nasty adult who successfully kills the thing who is willing to give and give and give for his self interest. Classic American story of our relationship with the the natural world. Of course, it calls into question a tree that apparently has no self respect, and never says, "No, enough." But, that's not how this story is told. I guess in the right hands, it could impart some powerful lessons, but I am not convinced that people take the time to seriously contemplate these kinds of ideas anymore. On the surface, it is just an ugly story about unfettered greed, a me, me, me mentality, no regard for anything but self, a stupidity that destroys, and a self destructive tree with no sense of self preservation. The whole thing was bad karma from beginning to end. It met the recycle bin within 10 minutes of getting here. F and shame on you Silverstein for writing such a garbage story. Giving? Yea. Right. This book should go out of print and some of the decent stuff that was written for kids should go back in. Just totally disgusted over here.
