★☆☆☆☆
Disappointing..
I very rarely leave reviews, I never really felt the need honestly. Until now that is, and it's only to help others decide if it's worth the read based on my view of story. 1st - let me inform you there are triggers in this book. Rape being the main one while descriptive violence is the other. If this bothers you then do not invest in this book. 2nd - there is NO closure at the end of this book. It leaves you with may unanswered questions and all around unfulfilled with the story. 3rd - the term slow burn does not even come close to this book... You don't get anything till the 94% complete area.. and then all you're going to get is some heavy petting. There is no mating between the main characters at all. Now for spoilers: My biggest issue with this book is the main female character, Kari. She never develops or grows. The whole story consists of her constantly saying she's scared, afraid she's going to be raped or beaten by orcs (she was raped by humans, no orcs. They did, however, rescue her and the other women and placed them in an encampment), tons of crying, never trying to understand her mates' (Bear) orc culture, always saying she's unhappy and nothing can make her happy, constantly rejecting her mate, and very self absorbed. The only growth development in the story is from Bear. He takes care of his little human when shes hurt. Learns to enunciate his English words better for her. Provides everything for her, including a house which she complains about because he picked it and decorated it for her as a surprise. Learns human culture for her. Learns about Christmas for her. Makes chicken soup for her when she's sick. Keeps his distance while trying to win her over. Killed the orcs that raped women. Learns from other humans and her so he can better provide for her. Takes what she says to heart. Gives her the option to leave him when she complains about never being happy and no one can make her happy. He goes above and beyond for her. There is no appreciation on her end till she almost loses Bear. She's so stuck in her pity party she never sees all Bear has suffered through for her. Kari's character kills this story. By the time there is any development between the two the story just ends. This story had potential, it could have been so much more. But sadly, it's not.
