The Software is OK, but the Installation Instructions Are Bad!
[UPDATE] After spending hours contacting Quicken Support and finally getting it working, I can tell you how to avoid that fate. You need to follow the instructions to the letter, but with one important change. DON'T FOLLOW AMAZON'S LINK IN STEP ONE! Here's how to do it. 1) Go to https://www.quicken.com and click on "Sign In" in the upper right corner. This is absolutely critical, and it's where Amazon's instructions went wrong. There is no sign-in option on the setup page, and if you enter your activation code and download the software without signing in, the code will be lost forever because it won't be assigned to an account. If you don't have an account, create one and make sure you're signed in before proceeding. 2) Without closing that window, add /setup to the URL so it becomes https://www.quicken.com/setup. As I said above, there's no sign-in link here, so that's why it's so important to sign in and navigate here without closing the window. Enter the activation code to begin the download. 3) From there it's pretty self-explanatory, or you can refer to Amazon's instructions. TO QUICKEN'S WEB DEVELOPERS: Come on, guys, this is software design 101 stuff, which you should have learned as a freshman. If there's a way someone can irretrievably screw things up with one mouse click, don't make it so easy to do! Add a function to check for a login, and pop up a sign-in dialog box saying "Please sign in first" if someone enters the activation without signing in. Better yet, make the "Sign In" link the first thing displayed on the page, and don't allow the user the option to enter the activation code until after the sign-in. You're making a lot of extra work for your support personnel. I waited for more than four hours the first time I tried to contact someone. TO AMAZON: When writing instructions you should tell the users what's most important right up front. Yes, signing in is mentioned in the instructions, but it's step two or step three. It should be step one in boldface and all caps, and you should provide a link to the main page. There is no sign-in option on the setup page, and no link to navigate to the main page from there. Getting help from Quicken is an ordeal, and it shouldn't be necessary if the activation is done right the first time. I may upgrade my review from one star after working with Quicken for a while, but I'm leaving it for now because it's important to call attention to this issue with the installation and activation process. Before buying, I always read the most helpful negative reviews, and I want potential buyers to know that I'm not saying not to buy Quicken, just saying to follow my instructions, not Amazon's, at least until they improve theirs.
