What a Strange and Unsatisfying Story
I don't understand the glowing reviews and awards. This story is only half told. There is clearly more, much more, to this story than the son/documentarian is willing to tell...once he found it all out. Or did he? There seems to have been a lot of animosity between the grandparents and the mother before and at the time of her disappearance, and maybe after too because it seems like there was contact with the grandmother telling the mother that she'd never have enough money to fight them for custody. What I took away from this was that the grandparents overreached and stole the children, ultimately giving the half brother to the other grandparents instead of involving child services and forcing their daughter to get help to resolve whatever parenting issues they believed she had. Instead, the grandmother used her connections with lawyers to have papers drawn up having her daughter give up custody of the children and making this a private affair instead of a court-supervised investigation as to the fitness of the mother. It seems they drove her away and refused to let her see her children, but also she did nothing to see them. She knew exactly where they were living. She could've just shown up at any time to see her sons and let the grandparents call the cops. She definitely could've done it once each turned 18. At least the sons would've known they were loved and wanted. I also don't believe the mother saw any attorneys trying to fight for her sons. Any lawyer would've at least tried to get a court to order visitation. However, this is all speculation on my part because the son leaves so many gaping holes in the story. With all the vitriol hurled in the beginning of the documentary, it's hard to believe the "happy ending" is actually legitimate. So many questions left unanswered by the poor storytelling. It seems the son is unable or unwilling to confront the fact that his "loving" grandparents who raised him may be the ones who actually caused all the pain and suffering in the first place.
