I verified the "sand" complaint....
Gave this a try without paying much attention to the complaints of it containing undissolved solids (sand??). First used it on some eggs and noticed a bit of grit, didnt think much of it at the time, but the more I used it, the more I was annoyed by it. So, I did an experiment. I dissolved one level teaspoon of this stuff in warm water and shook it a few minutes, then let it sit a while, and shake again. Then, I filtered the solution through laboratory filter paper and let that dry. I removed the "sand" with a tiny spatula and weighed it. As you can see in the pics, I got 50 micrograms (0.05 grams) of "sand" from only one random teaspoon of salt. I am no dentist, but I would be willing to bet this is NOT a good thing to eat. Use your best judgement. UPDATE 04/23/2018: After reading the article; "Wait, is that sand in my Real Salt?" I repeated the above experiment because they claim the product does in fact contain 0.1% silica, and that it is 'bio-available' and "the body can absorb and use them". I used the serving size of 1.4gr this time. I collected 0.021gr (1.5% silica to salt) of silica sand, put it in a beaker with 5ml of 1N HCL and 0.4gr of alpha amylase. Then placed it on a hotplate at 200F to mimic human digestion. After about 2 hours, the silica had completely dissolved, which would indicate it is indeed bio-available and doesnt just pass through the gut. I also talked to my dentist assistant and she said that small amount will not harm your teeth, in fact, it would help clean them. So, while I still do not like having sand in my mouth, I am satisfied it is not only harmless, but the claims Real Salt makes seems to be valid.
