Description is a bit misleading
The bristles stay retracted. You press the button to keep them out while brushing the dog. I don't have great hand strength so holding this button down while brushing my Great Pyrenees (lots of hair) just doesn't work well. I bought this brush expecting it would do what the image said that I'd push the button when it was time to remove the hair not the whole time I brushed.
