★★☆☆☆
Scathing review for a great design, questionable build quality.
I camp with five people. Two tents would probably be a better way to go but I really wanted one tent for everyone. This fit the bill. On arrival the box it came in was absolutely shredded. I was absolutely positive it was going to be damaged. It wasn't. The ease of setup was one of the reasons I bought this. The first time I set it up I managed to set it up inside out (I did read the instructions but just know that the product isnt idiot proof). Set it up at home for the first time. By the third time it really does take less than 5 min (probably less than two if I was going for speed). Zippers are all large and seem to be good quality. The fabric on the sides is thick nylon with a heavy water proofing. The screens are heavy and sturdy.
Concerns.
This thing is big and heavy. In it's folded state it is much heavier on one side than the other. It would greatly benefit from a bag with wheels. Think about how you are going to transport this. It isn't going to fit in the trunk being 6'6" long. It barely fits in my space booster rooftop cargo box and is a challenge for one middle aged fat guy to lift over his head. (No problem for two people). The zipper on the carrying bag seems the same size but the pull tab is very thin and has already bent. Not the same pull tab as what is on the structure thankfully.
The roof seems to be a slightly thinner material or maybe the waterproofing just isn't as heavy. The seams between the roof and the sides I think needs a coat of seam sealer. I can see light between the two parts. The pockets that the poles slip into on either side of the door are frayed already. They are a very cheap nylon webbing. My biggest concern is that the poles that make up the structure seem undersized. I have not had the structure up in any kind of wind but even all staked down I think the structure is flexible enough that it could be a problem. I live in an area where 25-35mph gusts are very common. One of the other comments below mentioned using a center pole. I think this is an excellent idea. I also put a length of cord on the center roof hinge to make taking it down a bit easier.
With all my gripes I think this is a well engineered product that has no competition for it's ease of set up and utility in it's price range. I would buy this again and I would happily pay a hundred dollars more if Clam made a few tweaks to make it slightly more robust.
Update 6/2018. Ok so I have had this a year and camped with it about 6 times. I was already to give this a great 1 year review then on the last day of my trip one of the tiedowns tore out (left side by the door). It was anchored in almost nothing. I think the floor tiedowns are almost worthless. Waiting to hear back from clam warenty Dept. I am also developing small holes in the roof (the thinner fabric) from rubbing on the poles. Will update again.
After a week, no response from clam customer service about the tornout tiedown.
