★☆☆☆☆
Archaic, bully glorifying, & racial bias
The only black kid in this book is shown as being hungry as soon as he gets to school. Instead of the teacher recognizing this and trying to help him, she keeps going on and the kids seem to chorale in not addressing his hunger.
I feel like the pages about “BFF” is what breeds “Mean Girls.” Emotional intelligent kids, use their words about how to work through disagreements and grow from their experiences.
The Armpit King was unnecessary and crude. Why even have this in a book about starting ANY grade.
Big Teeth - the line about “I’m such a freak”
Kids lose their teeth at different rates, being labeled a “freak” about now losing teeth shouldn’t be something that kids have to worry about. I would’ve appreciated a growth mindset viewpoint about losing teeth.
Also, any teacher would recognize that sending a kid home with 500lbs of glitter on an art project is going to get them fired.
I DONT recommend this book.
