Probably great for posting to social media... but...
Sorry to be the downer at the party but I cannot understand the good reviews for this camera. I’ve owned a Canon T3i DSLR for over five years. It was my first DSLR and with the 18-135 zoom lens (and other Canon lenses) I take tack sharp photos suitable for stock agencies and prints. A couple of years later I bought the Canon G16 point & shoot to have a camera I can throw in my purse. I’ve had several photos from that camera accepted as stock images… which have to be perfect in every respect. I was so happy with my two Canon cameras I even bought a Canon wide format printer and a Canon photo scanner.
I consider myself a serious amateur landscape and architectural photographer… a hobby rather than a profession.
So when it came time to upgrade my T3i to newer technology what could possibly go wrong if I stayed with Canon... especially as I have a bunch of Canon lenses. I really thought I had done my homework thoroughly. I won’t go into all the details but I learned a ton about cameras and all the variables and possibilities. I looked at everything from upgrading to the latest T7i to the 80D to a couple of full frame cameras. I read reviews and asked people for their opinions. I was intrigued with the idea of a mirrorless camera that could stand in between the T3i (or T7i) and the G16 in terms of convenience and suitability for my skill level.
I read all the reviews on Amazon and elsewhere and settled on the M50 mirrorless with the 18–150mm zoom lens (which has 4.3 star reviews itself). The whole package seemed too good to be true. That should have been my first clue. Unfortunately I didn’t have enough time during the first 30 days of ownership to really put the camera and lens through its paces so I lost the opportunity to return it. I bought the camera September 2018 so since then I’ve had considerable experience with it.
I bought an adaptor and took a lot of comparison photos with the M50 using my EFS lenses but there wasn’t much difference. In particular if anything would take a tack sharp photo it would be my prime EF 50mm 1:14 lens. But no go. I have taken a few sharpish photos with the camera but nothing I would want to blow up to say, a 13”x19” print that my printer is capable of. And certainly nothing I could submit for stock.
I’m not a serious videographer so my t3i (or G16) takes good enough videos for me on the fly without any hassle. So the M50 video capabilities don’t interest me that much. It seems many of the reviews addressed the video function. Perhaps that’s my problem.
It is a great camera (and lens) if you want something lightweight as an upgrade to a point & shoot to throw in your bag with just the one zoom lens and post photos of your dogs or kids to social media. But for anything more than that, in my opinion, forget it!
