Defective oven will not reach adequate temperature
Similar to other reviewers (such as Donna Ehler), I have had two of these defective ovens after HB replaced the original only to be sent another defective oven with the same defect. Here is my original email to HB: "Hi, This confirms my just concluded phone conversation with your customer support representative about my defective HB countertop convection rotisserie oven model: 31103 series: A262ICE. I bought it from Sears on 1/13/13 and from the beginning it was a cold oven, meaning it never heated up properly. The dial is marked for 450 degrees but it never gets hotter than 325-350. And it takes forever to heat up. The discrepancy between the dial temperature and the actual temperature is usually 100 degrees. Normally with toaster ovens, the heating rods will remain red until the oven reaches the desired temperature but this oven will cycle off well before the desired temperature is ever reached. The rods are seldom red hot even while I am waiting for it to heat up. It might reach its maximum temperature of 350 if I leave it on for 30 minutes or more. If I turn on the convection fan, the temperature will drop to 300. The oven is very frustrating and useless to cook pizza, biscuits, oven potatoes and many other things that require a high temperature. I believe the thermostat may be defective or the settings relating thereto are defective. I am forwarding my Sears eReceipt as well as a scan of my paper receipt as well as two pix. Please confirm receipt of this email and attachments. Thank you for your assistance in this matter." Then they sent another defective oven and here is my second email to HB: "On 4/22/13, I received the replacement HB rotisserie/convection toaster oven and I have been testing it out since then. I appreciate your conscientious and prompt honoring of your warranty agreement. Although it seems to function slightly better than my original oven, it still shares the inherent defect of insufficient heating. I put the heat knob to maximum which is 450 degrees (although the temp markings alongside the knob suggest it may go even higher). The top and bottom heating elements went red and the oven heated up to about 350 degrees but then cycled off. From then on, it just continuously cycles on and off wasting time and electricity as it remains at 350 degrees. I have tested the oven using two different oven thermometers so the interior oven temperature reading is accurate. The only way to coax 400 degrees out of the oven was to switch to broiler mode (where the top two heating elements stay on permanently) thereby adding a boost of supplemental heat to the oven. Obviously, you can't cook pizzas and many other items on just broiler mode but when you switch back to bake mode, the interior temperature starts to drop. Convection mode is not better; it won't go higher than 350 degrees. The rotisserie function works well because the two upper heating elements stay on using the broil/rotisserie mode. This is a defectively designed and/or manufactured oven. I have had two now that share the same defects. I presume they are all defective. It takes far too long to reach an ultimately insufficient temperature wasting time and electricity. So pizza, buttermilk biscuits, oven potatoes, bread etc etc are all off the menu because this cold oven won't reach the required temperature to cook these items properly. I don't understand why this oven can't be designed and engineered properly. It's a toaster oven -- it's not rocket science! Why can't it be designed so the heating elements stay on full blast until the desired temperature is reached and THEN cycle off and on to maintain the desired temperature???? Maybe you need to have a talk with your Chinese manufacturers. Or maybe you need to build it in the USA. It's a shame because this oven has so much potential to be great." In summary, I have had THREE of these ovens; the original I purchased from Sears and the two warranty replacements. They ALL underheat by 100 degrees. I am still using one of them since I paid for it and I have no alternative until I find something better. UPDATE 10/11/15. Like I explained above, I ended up with three of these things due to warranty returns. HB demands you sever the elec cord of the defective model and send you a photo of same so it can't be used again. I did this with one of the units but not the others. The heating elements of the second unit failed a few months ago and it became a large brick and I threw it out. I am now on the third and last unit. The rotisserie no longer works and the bottom on/off/timer knob has fallen off and I have to use a screwdriver to turn the shaft to turn the oven on and off. I have had less than one year of use from this unit. DON'T BUY THIS OVEN. IT IS COMPLETE GARBAGE.
