My son was assigned this book for his AP history course. I majored in history as an undergrad and have a Master's in Modern European History. I was curious so.... It is unkind to speak ill of the deceased, but this book is nonsense. There are few episodes of history that Zinn does not either get wrong, misconstrue, or just plain ignore factual evidence to further his ideological cause. For examples, I hardly know where to start: the Rosenberg's were guilty. No amount of prevarication can eradicate that fact, which was confirmed by countless sources from the former Soviet Union and by the Rosenberg's sons. Zinn's assertion that African Americans were uninterested in the outcome of WWIi is ludicrous and devalues the sacrifice of countless black fighting men. The Japanese were absolutely not prepared to surrender before Hiroshima and Zinn willfully ignores all scholarship to the contrary. The Fort Pillow massacre took place in Kentucky, not Tennessee. I could go on and on. That this book is utilized as an authoritative source for young people is a disgrace. This is not balanced scholarship, in fact it is not scholarship at all, it is a polemic and a screed.
