Customer support is non-existent for a defective unit
I received this product a couple of days after I purchased during a sale. Instructions said to let product sit for 2 hours to let coolant settle from shipment so, just to be safe, I gave it a day. Went to make my first batch of ice cream as a test - poured it in and hit Start. The controls are that easy to use. The Cooling light came on immediately even though the instructions said the light shouldn't come on for 2 minutes. Hmmm. Well, the temperature readout was trending down so I let it be for 30 minutes. Temperature when I left was 58 F and falling. Came back 30 minutes later and temperature was 64. Huh? After a full hour the temperature was 68 and I'm not sure the compressor came on at all. Tried a second time. Unplugged the unit, let it sit for a bit, then tried again. THIS time the Cooling light did not come on for a full 3 minutes. The countdown timer on the unit showed just under 57 minutes when it came on so I thought that maybe it would work this time. By the time 30 minutes had passed, the temperature on the unit showed 72.
OK so instead of returning it immediately I thought I would start with Whynter customer support to see if they had any ideas. Their recorded call said they were in their "busy season" and to either leave a message for a call back or, for faster service, send an email. I left a message still hoping to speak with a live person but by the next day, hadn't heard anything so changed my mind and sent an email. That was four days ago and I've not had a phone call nor have I received an email except for an automated response saying my "ticket" had been logged. I can forgive a lag of 2 or 3 days if a company gives me some indication of when they will respond but after 4 days have passed with no contact I'm going to assume I'm never going to hear from them.
So today the unit got returned to the vendor that sold it to me. Based on my customer support experience I decided to replace this unit with a Cuisinart since Whynter apparently does NOT want anything to do with their customers. (And, Whynter, if you read this, I'd recommend that you fix your customer support experience - hire more people or do a better job responding to requests - if you don't want PO'ed customers. It's the biggest reason why I will not purchase another product from you at this point.)
