Full of surprises, all right -- and not in a good way
My Favorite Husband is easily one of the five worst books I've ever read (although it doesn't take the top spot -- I'm looking at you, Veronica Roth). While the basic plot line (woman remarries after her first husband is declared dead following an accident, even though his body was never recovered, only to have said husband resurface the day of her wedding) has potential, the author makes a mockery of it by piling on a near-endless series of coincidences that have absolutely no basis in reality. That the missing first husband inexplicably turns up on the main character's wedding day is one thing -- but her boss, who just HAPPENS to be in love with the bride's new husband also just HAPPENS to be vacationing at the couple's honeymoon resort? And in what universe would a woman be arrested for bigamy within days of having remarried, especially when her first husband was declared legally dead? The characters are all flat, one-dimensional, and self-centered caricatures, with no redeeming qualities. I wanted to punch every one of them in the face at least once. Nothing about this book captured the complex emotional struggle that would result from a situation like the one the author sets up. Even for a book intended to be a light read, this aspect was particularly disappointing. The book reads as if it were the written description of a movie plot instead of actual literature. The author has a highly annoying habit of stating the obvious, as if she believes the reader is too stupid to figure out what has happened or how a character feels. She clearly needs to learn the very basic rule of Creative Writing 101: show, don't tell. Not to mention a decent editor. Even if you get this book for free, as I did, don't waste your time.
