Waste of material
Before I start - I love Amazon. I've been an Amazon customer for over 10 years and it has become a part of my life.
We all know that the phone was a major flop. Regardless of the fact that nobody wants it I decided to get one - you remember, I love Amazon and for the fact that I got it for $199 plus a free year of prime. Once the phone landed in my hands it took me probably only 10 seconds to find out that I hate the phone.
It is thick. Really thick for a phone of that size. Other thing I noticed once it landed in my hands is the weight. Why is it so heavy? Even the original iPhone 1, which is 7 years old, is considerably lighter than this brick. Phablets like the Samsung Note 3 or iPhone 6 Plus have a similar weight but they are huge.
And what's about the buttons? They are really hard to press as if I had a very imprecise case on it. When I turned it on, the first thing which I did, was calling mayday and asking them if it's normal that the buttons are so hard to press. The guy, who was really nice and pleasant to talk to, told me that it's normal but I'll get used to it. He said the phone is very innovative and some things are just different. Well, yeah, very innovative to make buttons unpressable.
The heat. I thought that with the latest update the phone has become "colder". I just spent like an hour with the phone but it really became uncomfortable to hold. It wasn't hot at all and it didn't hurt in any way but it caused my hands to be sweaty. Who wants to hold a phone for 5 minutes, have wet hands and give the hand to someone to shake? That's awkward!
The 3D thing - or whatever the name is. Totally nonsense. It looks as nice as a 3D television but a 3D TV makes certainly more sense. I just cannot think of an application where it actually makes sense besides just to show off. Also the navigation by tilting the phone to the right, left, etc. It just doesn't feel natural. Don't re-invent the wheel. The navigation with Android and Apple phones is pretty great. Just leave it that way or invent something that really changes the game and not some cameras that spy on me 24/7 which in addition to that bring no benefit for the user.
No Google Play. I know that you can install Google Play by some inconvenient hacking way but no. That's not how it should be. It should be easy. The reason why Apple has become so successful is that everything is easy. Why should I read or watch a long and complicated youtube tutorial to learn how to install apps, which I kind of need for my everyday life? I heard that it really becomes complicated when the App is available on Google Play and Amazon Store. It's just all too complicated.
The UI. Here we might come to the worst thing. Do you know the feeling when you install a free app and it drives you crazy that it shows ads all over the place? An ad bar at the bottom of an app, ad bar at the top... etc. This is exactly how you'll feel with a Fire Phone. You want to scroll the apps via the carousel - 50% of the screen will be Amazon ads. You want to use the Fire Fly feature - 50% of the screen will be Amazon Ads. If I pay for a phone I want it to be ad free. Let me not get started on the Launcher. I think there are enough people complaining about that so I just leave it.
Jeff Bezos is a genius, a visionary, a person I'm looking up to. So after all that I'm asking myself - how could such a great person get the idea that such a waste of material (fire phone) would make people pay for it $199 with a 2 year contract or $650. How? He wanted to sell it for the same price as an iPhone 5s or Samsung Galaxy S5 or other great phones. Where did he get that idea from?
Basically this phone feels like a free cruise vacation. Once you get on the ship, sells-people will bother you to death to buy something. After a couple hours you rather jump into the ocean than stay one more hour on board. That's exactly how I felt holding the phone - I just wanted to get rid off the phone.
Please Amazon. Again, I love you. I actually want to have a Fire Phone. A phone that is personal. A phone that respects my privacy, my own decisions and my personality. I want to have it my way. Not Amazon's way. I love my Kindle Reader. I love it even more than any of my Apple or Google products. Please don't give up on the phone. I know you can make it right. Just don't get the idea that the phone failed because of the high price. It failed because it did everything wrong. Every innovation in this phone is a fail. From design, UI, OS, features, fire fly, all over to app availability. Even if you had sold it for $0 with contract and $199 unlocked it would have been a flop. I dare to say that even for $99 with a free year of prime it would have been a flop.
Amazon please do it again but do it the right way and you'll have me as an happy owner of the Fire Phone 2. A phone that runs a normal Android. An up-to-date Android. An Android with Google Play, normal launcher, normal home screen, normal configuration page and normal Google apps. A phone that is sleek and elegant. A phone that is fast and future proof. A light phone. A phone that doesn't drive me crazy with Amazon ads. If you really want Fire Fly you you can keep it but make it more like an un-biase search engine. Give it a better battery life. Look at the iPhone. At its precious design and ask yourself - why does everyone in the world want this phone. What is its beauty. Why does it feel so nice, so light and so sleek. Make a phone that enriches my live. A phone that makes my live easier. Take all this input and make the greatest phone. I know you can do it Amazon.
Most importantly - Do it for the user and not for Amazon.
