Poor, Fractured Plot; Foul Mouthed; Politically Nuts
I thought Season One was great, tight and very funny. Season Two was less funny but still entertaining and I was hoping the writers would re-discover their pole star for Season Three. They didn't. Season Three was a disaster.
Instead of funny we were fed one emotional family battle after another, like a thousand bad Thanksgiving Dinners nobody wants to live through again. The characters were marred by a series of blatantly stupid decisions that, frankly, nobody would make in real life.
The script was littered with F-Bombs. People in the Fifties and early Sixties were more gracious than that. In fact, they still are in everyday life if they aren't pimply Incels trying to convince other punks of their virility. A tough librarian lady should burst in on the writers' brainstorming sessions and wash out every writer's mouth with lye soap. They need to clean it up. It isn't even a question of morality. It's a matter of taste and mastery of the language. Does anyone imagine that Gone With the Wind or The Maltese Falcon would be improved with hundreds of F-Bombs? They wouldn't.
The political insanity included making an admitted Communist playwright a sympathetic character which, is probably consistent with academic opinion of the era and tolerable. But the plot went completely insane praising mass murderers like Castro and Che Guevara, the latter of whom enjoyed watching and participating in extra-judicial killings. When did homicidal tyrants become admirable to script writers? The writers did think they found one 'monster' in Phyllis Schlafly who, admittedly didn't walk around with a pistol in hand shooting people in the head or live like an Oriental Potentate [Castro] while his people starved, but she was a conservative who dared not agree with all feminist dogma. I don't agree with everything Schlafly has said, I don't agree with a lot of people, but that does not make them 'monsters' in my eyes. I reserve that title for actual killers like Castro, Che, Hitler, Mao and Stalin. That these script writers cannot see the difference is worrisome.
The Third Season was almost unwatchable. In fact I let much of it play in the background because it was also boring.
