The highlighters are more wax than gel. They respond similar to crayons. So, when I did a test and highlighted something in the back of my Bible, turned the page, and then circled and underlined things on the back of that page, the wax transferred the circles and underlining to the opposite page (the page touching the page that had the highlighter) in the color of the highlighter. So if you are going to be writing in your Bible, these highlighters are not useful. (In the picture, you can see some light marks in blue and some more obvious purple marks on the left page.)
