Serious shortcomings - Fitbit One *VEHICLE!* Tracker
I write this review with great disappointment, but think it needs to be clearly said that the Fitbit One has problems.
The ONE task that this product is supposed to do best is "Track steps, distance, calories burned and stairs climbed." The problem is that the tracker sensitivity causes it to measure bumps and jostles (and elevation change) such that any vehicle-related activity -- e.g. driving a car, being a passenger, using public transportation, etc. -- incorrectly registers as lots of steps (and floors climbed).
I should have been suspicious from my first full day using this product: I estimate (using online maps) that I walked about 3.5 miles throughout the day -- the Fitbit One thinks I walked over 5.25 miles! The culprit? An hour on public transportation.
This is a known issue that was even present in the previous generation of the product, the Fitbit Ultra. The Fitbit solution/workaround is that I must remember the (exact!) times I am driving or on public transportation, and then log these times as "activities" so that the Fitbit knows to not count any "steps" during those times. (see [...] or [...]).
Fast-forward to the end of the week: today I walked about 3 miles, but the Fitbit registers that I walked over 4.5 miles! Even with all the hassle of remembering when I was driving and on public transportation and using the workaround, my corrected mileage/distance for the day is still around 4 miles.
I know that there are many great reviews for this product (in fact, the Fitbit "Dashboard" today directly prompted me and probably many other Fitbit One users to come write an Amazon review). Some of the reviews mention the inconvenience of this driving issue, but none seem to address the repercussions:
**The "activity" being measured is not an accurate reflection of my activity**
Instead of having a passive device that I keep with me, I am preoccupied with keeping track of when I am getting in and out of my car and getting on and off public transportation, AND THEN spending time at the end of the day entering this information into the Fitbit website. This is not what I expected, and a very discouraging lifestyle change when I expected the Fitbit One to help me accurately track my physical activity and sleep.
Edit: A competing product, the Jawbone Up (2.0) was just launched (11/14/2012). I will be trying that out.
