Buyer Beware - Protection Iffy - Warranty Worthless
True story... My husband and I were horrified one night when we heard a crackling sound and our RV filled with smoke. We searched frantically, but found no flame, and gradually the sound faded away and the smoke cleared. Then we found that all our electronics were either not functioning at all or behaving very oddly. For example, lights inside and outside the microwave were flashing randomly as if it were possessed. The next morning, the electrician arrived and diagnosed reverse polarity. He traced the cause to the surge protector, which outwardly seemed to be functioning normally. When he removed it from the system, the reverse polarity disappeared, and the electronics that still worked behaved normally. I did not want to be without a surge protector longer than necessary, so I immediately called Progressive Industries to arrange for a replacement. I had specifically bought their product because they touted a lifetime warranty. I explained to the Technical Support person what had happened. He replied—and I quote—“That’s not possible.” I said, “Here, let me let you talk to the electrician. He can explain things better than I.” After listening to the electrian, Technical Support’s reply? “That’s not possible.” Later, he relented slightly and said, “Send the unit in to us. We’ll take a look at it and go from there.” I sent in all the data they requested, pictures, and the unit itself. A few days later, I received a response by email. Our warranty claim was approved! A few days after that, I received a second email. They had *reversed* their decision; our claim was denied. Their excuse: “Something in the RV electrical system caused the incident.” Please know, we had no electrical issues before hooking up the Progressive Industries surge protector and have had none since removing it. I hope all readers learn from my cautionary tale.
