Pointless Plot
The whole book is rather pointless. Far better to have had them have to acknowledge the marriage before the young wife could become an inadvertent bigamist. The wife often went to live in the husband's home where she was taught her duties as his wife. It is unlikely that no one in the family knew she was married . They had to know so they wouldn't be marrying her off to another. His family would want her trained to fulfill her position.. If the story was like a marriage of convenience story where they had to get along and learn to love each other it might have been better.
There is no tension because she can't marry any one else.
