I wanted to like it
I've been a Fitbit One user for about a year and a half. When I remember to wear it, I find that it helps motivate me to get on my feet and move. I sync it with MyFitnessPal (through which I track calories consumed, and exercise) and I have a pretty good picture of the calories I'm taking in and burning. I was looking forward to the Surge for a few reasons: Long battery life, step counter that would be less likely to be forgotten, and a heart rate monitor. I tried it for a week, and here is a short list of the pros and cons that I found. Pros: - Very comfortable. I haven't worn a watch in years, but it took a very short amount of time to get used to it. - The battery life lasted as advertised Cons: - Step counter wildly off. After a few days of step counts that seemed higher than I normally had with my One (almost double), I knew something was wrong. I wore it on my non-dominant hand but marked it as my dominant hand to reduce sensitivity. I wore both devices one morning as I went about my business. You'll see that the Surge counted 3,221 steps, while the One counted 1,815. - Exercises counted as steps. I used the exercise feature to track my time while on a stationary bike. The heart rate monitor seemed to be close enough to the HR tracker on the bike, so I was happy with that. I finished my exercise and hit the action button to save it, then synched it to my phone. The spinning exercise was logged properly (30 minutes), but it also added around 800 steps to my step count. I wanted to like it, and the specs are very exciting. However, it is so wildly inaccurate as to be useless, and $249 is too much money to spend on such an untrustworthy instrument. I returned it after a week and a half, and went back to my One.
