This costume temporarily assuaged my sense of failure in life.
Late one night, I was engaging in especially negative self-talk about the fact that I have only earned two Master's degrees and not a PhD. I hated myself for it. I doubted my worth as a woman in a man's world. Then I pulled out my trusty Delicious Women's PhD Darling Sexy Costume, spent 1.5 hours putting perfect barrel waves in my hair and another 30 minutes applying porn star makeup, and ambled up to the full-length mirror in anticipation. As usual, I immediately felt the spark of inspiration and confidence return as I pretended for a brief but glorious moment that I had broken through the gender barrier and earned a PhD. But then, I lost balance ever so slightly on my stilettos and turned my ankle until it popped. It swelled up and I had to go to the hospital. I felt so stupid that everyone would see that I had been pretending a woman could earn a PhD, and immediately returned to the beginning of my vicious cycle of self-loathing.
